During periods with hormonal imbalances, such as pregnancy, a common and unwanted side effect is stripes on the skin, known as stretch marks. Newly formed stretch marks are typically pink, purple, or red, in time they fade, and the color becomes white.

Since the marks are often a result of pregnancy, it is often considered a woman’s issue, but the fact is that stretch marks men is a real problem and should not be ignored. If you are a man and you have gotten stretch marks during puberty or in a period of heavy weight training, it is important to realize that this is a common problem.

Treating Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are not dangerous and the appearance will usually improve over time. However, if you want to treat the stretch marks regardless, there are a couple of different options.

Old stretch marks can not effectively be treated with creams, but require more invasive procedures. An examples is dermabrasion or, usually preferable, laser treatment.

Treating Stretch Marks with Creams

Certain creams are able to restore and improve the forming of collagen in the skin. Some studies have shown that this can improve the appearance of stretch marks. It is important to note that the creams have only been shown to be effective in newly formed stretch marks, no older than six weeks and still colored red.

Additionally, it is crucial to note that most of these creams should not be used during pregnancy. This is obviously not practical since this is a time where the marks often are formed. But, obviously, the health of the child is the number one concern.

Consulting Your Dermatologist

If you want to get a professional opinion, your dermatologist can explain the different treatments available, their possible benefits and drawbacks. If your usual dermatologist doesn’t specialize in this treatment, he or she can get you in contact with one that does.

When treating stretch marks, it is important to be realistic about the result, otherwise you might end up disappointed.
