If you are thinking of taking up the sport of ice hockey, or if you have a child who is interested in playing this amazing sport, there are certain things that you can do to develop the necessary skills to have an enjoyable time quickly. I spend a lot of time at ice rinks and while there are countless levels and leagues to play in, I am always amazed by the number of people who take up hockey before knowing any of the basics of ice skating properly.

There are many people who watch professional hockey and in turn decide that they want to buy all of the ice hockey equipment and join an amateur hockey league. The problem is that these people skip an important step in the development of any hockey player which hinders their ability to improve their skills and enjoy the sport. The best thing that you can do if you have the itch to take up hockey is to buy yourself a pair of inexpensive or used hockey ice skates and spend some time learning to skate at your local ice arena. Many ice rinks have public sessions where you can skate around the rink for hours at a time. While this might sound boring to someone who loves the action that they see from professional hockey players, it is a necessary step that will allow you to make great strides in becoming a skilled hockey player much quicker than the aspiring hockey player who jumps right in without ever learning how to skate.

Once you learn the basics of ice skating, like how to stop, how to skate backwards, how to cross-over, etc. you will see that you will have an easier time learning the basics of ice hockey after you have the basics of skating down. If you separate the two skill sets and tackle just one at a time you can be sure that you will be able to develop into a decent hockey player in no time. Obviously hockey is not an easy sport to play, especially on an elite level, but if you know the right way to go about learning how to play you will be a good hockey player in your amateur level hockey league if you just give it enough time and patience.
