If you are concerned with safety when hiking or even on long walks in your neighborhood a solution to this problem is carrying small protective devices from a neck lanyard. Now a sawed-off shot gun is a great protective device, but it won’t hang from a neck lanyard and may provoke more trouble than it would be worth. The devices that you would probably need are a whistle to ward off intimidating strangers and attract the attention of passersby. This may also be handy in bear country to ward off bears and let them know that you are around. Bears with cubs don’t like surprises and neither would you.
Another handy thing to carry would be a small led flashlight. These come in very small sizes and will shine for a long time on a single battery. You never know when extra light would be a benefit or when the flashlight in your car has dead batteries.
In town hiking trips would be a great place to have a cell phone along and hanging it from a neck lanyard would keep your hands free and prevent random dialing of people in your contact list. If hanging free, buttons won’t get pressed like they do when stuck in a pocket. Try it out you may even be able to converse with speaker mode if the surrounding neighborhood isn’t too
Cameras work well as an attachment to a lanyard and again if you are traveling through scenic country keeping the camera at ready is a must as you never know when the chance to miss the “greatest picture ever” will occur. It can be even be stuck in the front of a light jacket and zipped in to protect from rain or other elements.
Think about how you could organize a small kit to make your walks and hikes safer and more convenient in all weather.
