Stand Out From The Crowd With Amber Earrings

Amber is the only gem that was originally organic given that it is made from fossilized tree resin. Most of the amber that is used in jewelry today comes from the Baltic region or the Dominican Republic and although most people think of it as being shades of golden brown, it actually comes in many different colors, including reddish-orange, orange, light yellow, green, brown, white, blue and almost black. It may be transparent or clouded and while most of it has inclusions some does not, and its common for pieces of plants and insects to be trapped in the resin to increase its beauty. Amber can be easily carved into almost any shape, depending upon the imagination of the carver and the size of the gemstone. Amber jewelry needs to be treated carefully because, like anything organic, it does not last forever.

Amber earrings are most commonly cabochon, or smooth cut for all types of jewelry. You can sometimes find amber earrings faceted like other jewels and placed in settings that are similar to those for diamonds, rubies, etc. You can also find amber earrings shaped like teardrops with the setting merely at the top of the teardrop, fastened to the hook for pierced ear earrings. Amber can be cut into the shape of flowers, balls, triangles, hearts, squares, rectangles, round discs, shield-shaped, or even rough polished to retain most of their original shape to name only a few of the ways in which amber gems are shaped to be placed into earrings. Amber earrings may include any of these shapes to make beautiful, elegant, or funky earrings, depending upon what the buyer wishes to wear.

Some of the best amber earrings have as their focal point pieces of amber that are roughly shaped but retain the character of the original piece of amber from which they were made. These pieces of amber are then circles by silver or gold and fastened to the jewelry findings that make them into lovely earrings. There are also examples which have three tiny strings of irregularly shaped amber depending from a bar that may be at the bottom of a triangle, a square, or other shape that has a larger amber gem set in it. Others have one string of irregularly shaped gemstones each that are in different colors of amber and graduate from smallest at the top to largest at the bottom. Whatever style you like best, amber can be shaped to fit it.
