When people think about infertility they will often think about a couple that is having a hard time conceiving no matter what they do and the couple is often childless. Who would’ve guessed that there’s a second type of infertility that afflicts seemingly normal couple. By normal, I mean a couple who has a child tugging along their side. These couples don’t have any problem conceiving their first child but when it comes to second child they’re usually as frustrated as the couples without any child.

Here’s the clinical definition of secondary infertility:

The inability to conceive a child when there has been previous instance, or instances, of conception and birth.

This simply means that the couple is unable to have children even when they had a previous one before. Now an infertile couple might scoff or roll their eyes back when I mention that secondary infertile couples are as frustrated as normal infertile couple because they at least have one child while normal infertile couple has none. Be grateful, says the infertile couple.

But it is precisely why secondary infertile couple are so frustrated. The existence of the previous child shows that there’s inherently nothing wrong with them, (reproductive system wise) so why are they having such a difficult time conceiving? What are the secondary infertility causes? Secondary infertile couple is plagued with uncertainty and their condition shrouded with mysteries as even doctors can’t really tell what is wrong with them most of the time.

The conclusion is, no matter infertile or secondary infertile; the couple is usually going through some pretty tough time. Of course, just like normal infertile couples, there’s a lot of treatments available for treating secondary infertile couples. Normal technique like gauging the ovulation temperature, going to the doctor for options like IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), Intrauterine Insemination and many more.

Of course, traditional treatments like yoga, herbs, acupuncture and others still apply to secondary infertility.
