Sadly for some home-owners that are deprived of space, they fail to realise the true potential of the space that they have under their homes. Usually the basement is the biggest room in anyone’s house, most people will use it just for storage, or worse, leave it empty and let it get damp. Basement renovation has many challenges that are beyond what you would face when dealing with other parts of your home, but once you understand the challenges they can be easy to deal with.

One of the biggest problems we face with basement renovation is the moisture that you find in most basements. This is one reason why large parts of the Deep south do not have any basements. In these parts of country sadly, the water table is far too high. The moisture we find in basements comes from three basic sources, and the three of these can be resolved quite simply.

One of these sources is condensation. Basements are totally surrounded by damp earth, then when it rains that earth gets wetter. So this ends up creating almost a greenhouse effect in basements. To fix this you will need to have the whole basement, the walls and the floor, coated in a waterproof sealant. This sealer isn’t all that cheap, but once you have done it, that’s it for a good number of years. The next source of moisture comes from very small cracks in the walls or floor. The little cracks are a way for the moisture to seep from the damp soil outside into the basement. Before you start renovating you need to go over the whole basement and check for imperfections. If you come across any issue then best thing to do would be to call in a professional to get advice. Finally there is the chance of leaking or sweating pipes. This is a really simple thing to fix using solder or insulation, and since these pipes will likely be hidden during the renovation it doesnt matter what they looks like.
