One of the great advantages of installing concrete pavers is that they are near maintenance free; indeed, this is why many homeowners invest so much money and time into these projects. However, this isn’t to say that pavers don’t need any maintenance, especially to stay strong and beautiful. The smallest investment of time into your paver walkways will yield benefits for the durability and beauty of your paving stone project. Best of all, you won’t have to invest much time and money or effort into this maintenance.
First, you need to make sure that the sand between the joints is at an appropriate level. The elements, especially wind and water, will eventually ‘scoop’ out some of the sand in the joints. If this happens too much, the pavers will get loose and potentially fall apart, harming the overall durability and lifespan of the project. Thus, you may need to occasionally top off the joints with new polymeric sand to make sure it all holds together nicely.
In addition, if you are using sand between the joints, you may have to deel with pests – weeds and ants – taking residence in your paver joints. Some simple weed killer will help remove these weeds, and simply washing away the anthills will remove that problem.
However, if you want to totally stop all these problems from having, you can seal your pavers. Sealing pavers offer you many benefits, but most of all give your pavers a ‘new lease on life’ by increasing their lifespan. They also help protect them against the rays of the sun which may, over time, make the natural colors of the material fade a bit. Sealing your pavers will also protect the stones against stains, making it easier to clean them off if you ever have to deal with some nasty chemical falling on the surface of your application.
