To most people, cosmetic surgery is traditionally thought of as something undertaken primarily by women. With many of the most common surgeries, such as breast enhancement, designed especially for them, it’s not hard to see why. However, in recent years more and more men are taking the decision to undergo the knife to make improvements to their bodies, and one of the most popular treatments chosen by them is liposculpture.

Liposculpture for men, as a procedure, is identical to that which is carried out on female patients. At the initial consultation the surgeon will discuss with the patient what their desired body shape is, and a decision will be made about the amount of fat that should be removed from the body. It’s good practice for this consultation to be made at least a week before the surgery takes place, so the patient has a chance to think through the procedure and have any questions answered before the surgery takes place.

On the day of the surgery the patient will be given an anaesthetic and taken through to the operating room. An incision will be made into their body, which will allow the surgeon to insert a tube through which the fatty tissue will be suctioned away. Once the predetermined amount of fat is removed, the remaining layer of fat will be shaped and contoured to match the underlying muscle, and the incision closed with either sutures or surgical glue. The patient is then admitted to post-operative care, where they will spend several hours recovering from the anaesthetic and the surgery.

After the surgery the patient can expect to feel a little sore and tender for a couple of weeks, and because of the swelling the effects of the procedure may not be immediately obvious. Once a full recover is made, most are happy with the results.

Since the advent of non invasive liposuction, patients can be spared the discomfort and risks of a surgical procedure. Instead of the fat being suctioned from their body, a laser is used to melt it through the skin – the dissolved fat is then passed naturally through the body as waste. This procedure has a number of obvious benefits, but it has to be noted that many patients are left with blisters and soreness afterwards. This does clear within a couple of days, usually, giving patients a significantly improved recovery time when compared to the traditional surgical alternative.
