One of the most glitzy, glamorous types of rings in the history of jewelry is the cocktail ring. It has made a comeback recently, after being absent from the jewelry boxes of fashion conscious women everywhere for over 40 years.
Cocktail rings have a long and very interesting history. The term “cocktail ring” was coined by the women who wore them to parties in the 1920’s and 30’s in America, during the era of prohibition. Of course, the parties were filled with outlawed alcoholic drinks and so the large, sparkling rings that were the fashion in the “Roaring 20’s” soon became known as cocktail rings. The rings retained their popularity with fashion-forward women through the early 1960’s, and then fell out of favor as the young women of the time discovered the mood rings and peace beads of the 1960’s “flower power” era. Today, cocktail rings are more popular than ever, thanks to a very visible and thriving party atmosphere in Hollywood. Starlets began wearing large splashy cocktail rings at parties and at red-carpet events, and the rest of the world was again in love with them. Cocktail rings designed with yellow and chocolate diamonds have especially caught the eye of the general public.
Most cocktail rings are made with one central stone and other smaller stones surrounding the focal stone. They can be designed in many ways, however, with the main requirement being that they are BIG. One great thing about them is the fact that they work well with so many other types of jewelry. You could easily build a Pandora charm bracelet around a cocktail ring of any color, for instance. Pearl strands, charm bracelets, even birthstone rings for moms will coordinate beautifully with many types of cocktail rings, also.
Cocktail rings are glitzy and glamorous. The phrase “everything old is new again” certainly applies here, because they are very popular and definitely deserve a spot in every woman’s jewelry box.
