Hypothyroidism is caused because the thyroid gland is not producing an adequate amount of the thyroid hormones necessary for proper bodily functions.  One of the main reasons why the thyroid hormones are not being produced is because of a lack of iodine in the diet.  Iodine is needed in proper quantities for these hormones to be made, and if it is missing, then hypothyroidism will result.

There are two thyroid hormones that are very important just for the basic running of our bodies.  These hormones control how your body will use fats and carbohydrates, in other words, how the fuel your body needs to run is managed.  If the hormones are not present in the correct amount, then your body will be unable to operate at its full potential.  If your organs and cells are not getting the energy they need, then you will suffer some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism.  In all likelihood, you will feel tired and lethargic.  You will probably be constipated and may even suffer from a high cholesterol level, which will lead to other risk factors.

While an iodine supplement will often help control hypothyroidism, it is also true that many people suffering from this will experience difficulty in fine-tuning their medication.  This is where chia seeds can help to alleviate some of the symptoms and help the person feel better.

Since chia seeds help to regulate the release of carbohydrates into your bloodstream, it can keep the levels more even, avoiding any ups and downs.  If the carbohydrates your body needs are not getting to your cells and tissues, you will feel rundown and fatigued.  Chia releases carbohydrates into your body as they are needed, and can help you to feel more energized.

The Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants present in chia seeds can help to address some of the heart complications that may arise from hypothyroidism.  Preventing the formation of too much of the bad cholesterol and elevating levels of good cholesterol will help to keep plaque from forming on the walls of the arteries and veins, and this will help to prevent heart disease.

Although it is not a subject anyone likes to talk about, hypothyroidism can also cause constipation.  This can also contribute to a feeling of lethargy and listlessness.  Chia can help with this problem as well.  Chia contains both soluble and insoluble fiber which both aid in keeping the digestive processes regular, and can help to alleviate this annoying symptom of hypothyroidism.

Chia is not a substitute for anyone’s thyroid medication, you will still need to take your regular doses.  However, chia can help to make living with this condition easier.
