Hostel Expectations

When backpacking Europe, probably the most common way to keep the budget down is to sleep in hostels. Personally, I love them. But they’re not for everyone. I love them for the social atmosphere that you just don’t get in a hotel environment. You will meet other backpackers who are doing Europe on a budget just like you, and it’s wonderful. What sort of expectations should you have for hostels though? Well, at a very basic level a hostel should provide you with access to a bathroom (normally shared) and a bed (generally in a dormitory) in clean conditions. Most hostels in Europe tend to offer way more then just a bed and a toilet though. Remember though, you do generally share the room with other people. Sometimes they snore, or make noise. I have yet to have a truly horrible experience in a hostel however, so I do always highly recommend them to other travelers.
