Every married woman dreads her husband’s obsessions—unless of course her husband is obsessed with her. Men may gripe about it, but is it really that strange that women want their husbands to love them more than sports or any other object or activity under the sun? After all, sports are activities, not people; sports will never feel the pain of being unloved and unwanted, but people do. Sadly, when it comes to NASCAR widows, their husbands are not obsessed with them; in fact, their husbands are barely cognizant of the fact that they even have a wife. I am a sports fan, but to be honest, I do not understand the NASCAR obsession.

You have a bunch of cars going around a circular track. Around and around and around they go. I do not see how this compares with a hail Mary touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the game or a buzzer-beating shot from half court, but there are those who do see the wonder of it all, much to the chagrin of their wives. These NASCAR fans can think of no other celebration that can compete with the festivities surrounding a NASCAR race. There’s the food, the drivers, the cars, the race, and the magic of it all. It is a very male-oriented sport. Is it any wonder that some wives fail to fall in love with their husband’s mistress? Take a moment and put yourself in the shoes of the NASCAR widows. It’s not very fun, is it? While it is true that some women take the time to go to the track and to learn the ins and the outs of track life, it is also true that most women who do so are really undertaking nothing more than a desperate ploy to spend time with their husbands.

When your husband is alive and breathing down at the track while you sit at home taking care of the kids and making sure that things are in tip-top shape for your husband’s return, you have no such consolation. Being the widow of someone who is living, but dead to you has its own special blend of pain. This is a pain that NASCAR widows know too heart-searingly well. There are those men who live their life around NASCAR; men who only see their wives as someone to bring them snacks during the race and to keep the kids out of the way. These are the husbands of the NASCAR widows.
